Turning Habits Into Routines

I partnered across product, engineering, and research to shape a personalized habit formation experience to help members build lasting mental health routines.

Challenge

Only 55% of Headspace members remained active by their second month, with the highest risk of churn occurring within the first two weeks. Many members arrived motivated to improve their mental health but struggled to turn that motivation into a lasting routine.

Connecting Intent to Action

The first question wasn't what the habit experience should look like. It was where it should begin.

I explored opportunities across both D2C and B2B onboarding journeys to capture member intent at the right moment, translating onboarding signals into personalized habit-building experiences without adding unnecessary friction.

A Behavioral Design Hypothesis:
Rather than asking members to create habits before they had experienced value, I explored introducing habit setup immediately after completing relevant content.

To quickly evaluate different interaction models, I used AI-assisted design workflows to prototype future-state concepts and communicate ideas with engineers early in the process. These interactive prototypes accelerated conversations around scope, personalization, and implementation before investing in development.

Moving Into Implementation

Following concept validation and cross-functional alignment, this work transitioned into active product development. While I can't share implementation details or outcomes yet, the concepts continue to shape how habit formation is being integrated into the member experience.
